When it first aired on ABC, The Day After was watched by more than 100 million people, still the highest-rated television film in history. It imagines a fictional war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact that rapidly escalates into a full-scale nuclear exchange. The story focuses on how the war affects the residents of Lawrence, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, as well as several family farms situated near nuclear missile silos.
